17.1 is in the books

Samantha Brown

It starts… with 17.1.

Reebok started their Open debut in Montreal, Canada, while we started ours a little closer to home: our home, Crossfit HTF.

Dave Castro did not disappoint in the first workout that we all waited for. With two new Open elements thrown in, burpee box jump overs and dumbbell snatches, some athletes were a little unsure how they would fare.

“I thought the snatches would be hard because we never did them before here. It was the burpees that were really hard,” said Michael Arakaki.

“I did better than I thought. I finished the 50 sets of snatches and that’s better. I thought I was only going to finish the 40,” Linzen Garcia recalled.

Garcia is among the more than 50% of women who did not finish. According the scores logged through Beyond the Whiteboard, the preliminary numbers show 56% of women did not beat the 20 minute time cap, and 49% of men didn’t.

If you didn't do as well as you hoped, there are four more chances to make up points for the leaderboard.

After the WOD, we asked a couple athletes what they thought about the workout and if there was a point at which they wanted to quit.

At what point did you want to stop?

“By the time I felt like I was going to throw up, I had five burpees left so I thought, ‘Screw it. Might as well finish.’ I just wanted to finish because there was ten seconds left,” said Olivia Uchima.

Clarence Chee said he wanted to quit four minutes into the 20 minute workout. “I was doing burpees.”

David Stoesser said he wanted to quit a little over halfway through. “When I got to the 30 snatches. I think I was eleven something in and I was like ‘Wow.’ But I had good coaching on the side.”

I wanted to quit at the third round of burpees.

Our evening finished as co-owner of Shakas and Snatches, Joshua Baldovino, completed the workout in 16:20, followed closely by another HTF Athlete.

S. challenged Baldovino in 17.2. Who will win? We will find out next week!

Come see us for 17.2 at Crossfit Kuleana for Friday Night Lights: Hawaii Edition. Stay tuned for where we will be for 17.3!

How did you do? When did you want to stop? What do you think Dave Castro will throw at us next week?
