17.2, the return of dumbbells

For 17.2, Dave Castro revived what we all hoped was just a bad nightmare: the dumbbells. After seeing Kari Pearce and Kristi Eramo handle them with little effort, it looked like the next big challenge would be at the bar for muscle-ups in RXed or chin-over-bar pull ups in Scaled.

Smith got her first muscle up during 17.2

Shakas and Snatches spent Friday Night Lights at Crossfit Kuleana excitedly watching to see who was going to get their first in either movement.

The energy the spectators created helped to push Jena Smith over the bar and complete her first muscle ups. “I didn’t expect to get any muscle ups. I got three!”

Both Juliana Mello and Jotelayne Sobreira felt like the movement the struggled with most were the pull ups. Both ladies said, “My struggle is the bar.”

According to Beyond the Whiteboard, that is where half of the women struggled. In fact, a little less than 20% of women made it through the third round in RXed.

Mello felt like the hardest part was the lunges.

“After a while, you really feel it in your glutes. You just want to quit, but you’re like, ‘no, I’m going to keep going. I’m almost done.’” This is also where Mello felt like she wanted to quit.

Smith said she did not have that point. She just wanted to get to the bar for muscle ups.

While at Crossfit Kuleana, we got a chance to see R.S. go head to head against Shakas’ co-owner, Josh Baldovino.

In the fourth round, S. tried as hard as he might but Baldovino hung on longer to the bar. When time was called, Baldovino had completed 15 muscle ups while S. had reached 9. The total reps were Baldovino’s 127 to S’s 121.
