"Terrible Twos" take two

Samantha Brown

On the day titled “April Fools,” who wouldn’t have expected a change up in at least one of the workouts? Teams of two knew the workouts in advance: they practiced synchronizing their pull ups, burpees, and strategized what weights to do for their cleans.

There was one minor April Fools shenanigan that Shakas and Snatches’ co-owner Josh Baldavino had up his wrist strap. In Scott Panchik’s first workout, burpees were added between the wallballs. Partners had to adjust to the added second the other partner would need for their burpee; mess it up, and the other partner could end up with a wallball landing on their head.

Celebrating the 3rd anniversary of Shakas and Snatches was more than throwing a couple of wallballs in the air and moving some heavy weight, it was about coming together to support another year with Hawaii’s local fitness brand.

With the Open recently finished, 87 teams were ready to go head to head in a hau’oli competition and just have fun in the Aloha spirit. Good fun and a good brand always make the good times roll, and at Alaka’i Crossfit, there was a lot of room for fun.

Everyone was screaming as some heavy lifters were putting up heavy weights in the hang snatches. The heaviest was 325 pounds by RXed first place winners Team Crusty Petals and 470 pounds by RXed fourth place team K Squad.

Congratulations to the all of the winners:

We asked several of our Ohana what they loved about Shakas and Snatches. They had some pretty awesome things to say:

“[Shakas and Snatches] represents ALOHA! The gesture of “SHAKA” [shows] how they always keep things FUN. It’s a little crazy at times, but Josh always equates the fun aspect of it all. Shakas empowers everyone and anyone willing to take the step. Thanks always for keeping it fun and worthwhile. Always epic. Always legendary!” Peter Go
“I love that [Shakas] consistently organizes fun events that bring the Crossfit community together.” Taya Thompson
“I would first have to say that the best part about the community is that all the athletes truly want everyone to succeed and more importantly have fun. It’s an amazing atmosphere that supports everyone from those who have been crossfitting for years to just a few months. Shakas and Snatches embodies that same spirit and their gear brilliantly represents the community and extends its reach to new members everyday.” Brian Lincoln
“I love the competitiveness and support within the crossfit community! Mahalo nui loa for an amazing competition.” Ethan Neves
“Shakas and Snatches symbolizes the TRUE spirit of our local CrossFit community and creates ways to connect the people of Hawaii and beyond. Thank you for a great day of fun, competition and togetherness!” Joanna Garcia Tablang
“The Ohana sentiment made suffering through tough workouts fun! I look forward to competing again next year!” Billy Mehl
“It's always a great time competing alongside Hawaii's finest doing workouts that tested all areas of fitness. Shakas and Snatches is a representation of fun, fitness and Aloha and the competition was all of that and more!” Allison Bean

Mahalo to all the volunteers and a big Mahalo nui loa to Alaka’I Crossfit for allowing the Terrible Twos competition to invade their gym and use their equipment.

We love our Crossfit community and thank you for all of your support. Here is to many more competitions with the Shakas and Snatches’ ohana.
