Last weekend, April 14th, we hosted our 3rd annual partner CrossFit competition, Shakas and Snatches’ Terrible Twos. It was a packed house at Alakaʻi CrossFit, with over 170 athletes grinding through five grueling workouts. Over 25 gyms from around the state participated, making it the largest CrossFit competition by attendance. Here’s a quick breakdown of our participants:
We also implemented a new judging system, Bring Your Own Judge. While it initially caused a bit of stress and anxiety for a few athletes, it ultimately led to a more smooth, community-based competition experience. Everybody pitched in and supported one another. Mahalo everyone for your aloha and kōkua.
The day was filled with five workouts that seemed to progressively increase in intensity. Out of all the workouts, one event seemed to be the talk of the town - Event 2: Cardio Bunny. Teams loved the idea of doing burpees over one another, as it posed a new and humorous twist to the traditional movement. Pictured below is Melissa Llerena of CrossFit Kaneohe expertly executing our rendition of the burpee movement.
The heaviest workout of the day was a complex of four movements: the deadlift, clean, front squat, and shoulder to overhead. Teams had to battle through progressively heavier barbells with the female barbell ending at 185lbs and the male barbell at 275lbs.
The top times for this workout was earned by Brian Lincoln and John Ivans, Team MAGA of CrossFit KBlock, with a time of 4 minutes and 43 seconds. CrossFit Games veterans Elyse Umeda and Brandy Richardson of 808 B&E of CrossFit 808 took the fastest time of the day, with a time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds.
All additional workout descriptions can be found below:
As athletes headed into the final workout, only the top five teams in each division qualified for the finale. Athletes battled one another for 20 minutes, and as time expired there were four ties for the coveted podium spots.
To end the day and determine who would stand on the podium, teams nominated one individual to participate in a winner take all weighted plank challenge. The video below demonstrates the grit and determination of our men’s RX athletes: Brian Lincoln John Ivans of CrossFit Kblock and Neils Seim and Reace Hudgeons of Alaka`i CrossFit.
Thank you again for everyone who helped support the event. Mahalo to our volunteers and vendors. Lastly, great job to all the athletes who participated, and congratulations to our podium finishers!
If our event caused you to get bit by the competition bug, please see other events happening around the state soon.
