On July 22nd, Shakas had the opportunity to partner with Maui’s local Make-a-Wish foundation and sponsors The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas and Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa to raise money in order to grant wishes for local keiki.

The goal was to raise $10,000, but thanks to the generosity of the local athletes in Maui, the boxes collectively raised over $11,000! These funds go towards granting keikis’ wishes who have life-threatening illnesses.

According to Maui News, over 200 athletes at seven different boxes worked out to a wod that was designed in attribute to local Make-A-Wish recipient, Tavin Hashimoto.

Bragging rights for the box who raised the most money were at stake. Maui Crossfit Extreme beat out all other boxes, raising a total of $2052.

Box owner Lisa Setiawati said that a lot of their success was due to the connection to the local community on Maui.

The event really hit the heart of the members because it does benefit local keiki. - Setiawati

She said that the boy whose journey the workout was created from lives only a short distance away from her and co-owner Staci Fujimoto’s box. They loved that the people who the event benefitted lived so close and it was someone that they could actually meet.

Shar Pacheco was the leading donator. Setiawati said that Pacheco raised funds through bake sales, burpee petitions and talking to people face to face to raise a total amount of $1025. Setiawati said that she believes that communicating with potential sponsors face-to-face is the best approach. “It makes it more personal.”

She also said seeing the young people who would be benefitted and have the opportunity to receive their wishes granted was another way the event became such a huge success.

Make-A-Wish representative James Donnelly wanted to express a Mahalo Nui Loa to the sponsors The Westin Nanea and Shakas and Snatches for their support.

Shakas and Snatches co-owner Mario Quezada said that he hopes similar event will take place on Oahu, but has no definite date as of yet. Keep an eye on our events calendar and social media for additional details.

Even though the donations to the event is closed, anyone interested can donate directly to Make-A-Wish Hawaii.

Lastly, Tavin had a message for all those who participated. Tavin is battling Leukemia and wishes to visit Disneyland.
